Market History:
RHFM was started by a small group of eco-friendly minded folks at St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church. After organizing a few eco-centred events at the church, the group decided they wanted something to appeal to a broader range of people. They wanted to promote an activity that was practical, and one that would connect our neighbourhood with local entrepreneurs. A farmers’ market fit all of these criteria.
In 2010, the progressive thinking Board of Directors of the previous River Heights Community Centre agreed it would be a great idea to have a farmers’ market at the community centre. Our partnership was formed and things began to fall into place.
Our first market day was held on July 9, 2010 and was ‘farmerless’! Yes, it was 'farmerless’ because it was a cool, wet spring, so the crops were a bit late. So on our first day we had one vendor - a gluten-free baker, one non-profit agency, and over 100 customers. The lesson we took home was that our community was keen to connect with local producers.
Currently, our market has grown into one that offers a wide selection of locally grown produce, flowers, fruit and more. We also feature a variety of locally made baked goods, jewelry, art work, home decor and crafts. And our attendance is steadily growing!
Our market is a joint project of St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church and the Corydon Community Centre. We have a steering committee and volunteer coordinator to keep us all on track.
Our vision for the future is to remain a quality, welcoming neighbourhood market where area residents can purchase locally grown farm products and goods created by Manitoba artisans.
